Dr Soban Sadiq

Senior Lecturer Biomedical Sciences/Clinical Pharmacology

About

Dr Soban Sadiq completed his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) and MPhil in Clinical Pharmacology in Pakistan. Following his postgraduate studies, he worked as a Medical Registrar in the Department of Medicine, where he developed a keen interest in translational and clinical research, particularly in type 2 diabetes mellitus. To advance his expertise, he undertook a PhD in Molecular and Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Liverpool, United Kingdom. Subsequently, he was appointed as Strategic Teaching Fellow (Clinical Pharmacology) at Imperial College London. Dr Soban has extensive experience in medical education and research, with numerous publications in national and international peer-reviewed journals. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA), Fellow of the Academy of Medical Educators (FAcadMEd) and Royal Society of Public Health (FRSPH). At the Kent and Medway Medical School (KMMS), he currently serves as Module Lead for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, Vertical Theme Lead for Pharmacology, and Academic Lead for the Prescribing Safety Assessment (PSA).

Research interests

Dr Soban’s primary research focuses on drug-induced metabolic toxicities, including dyslipidaemia, insulin resistance, obesity, and diabetes mellitus. His research has particularly examined antipsychotic and anticancer drug-induced metabolic disturbances, elucidating the underlying molecular and cellular mechanisms. His doctoral research identified critical roles for adipokines and lipid dysregulation in mediating these effects, providing insights into potential therapeutic targets.

Beyond his laboratory research, Dr Soban also pursues medical education scholarship, with active interests in clinical pharmacology education, team-based learning (TBL), and innovative digital learning environments, including the use of metaverse and AI-based platforms for teaching and assessment. His educational research aims to enhance student engagement, clinical reasoning, and safe prescribing practices.

Teaching

Dr Soban’s principal teaching area is Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics. He has substantial experience in teaching undergraduate and postgraduate learners, employing contemporary pedagogical approaches to enhance pharmacological understanding and clinical application. His teaching philosophy emphasises evidence-based practice, interactive learning, and the integration of pharmacological principles into clinical decision-making. As Module Lead for Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics and Vertical Theme Lead for Pharmacology at KMMS, he oversees curriculum design, delivery, and alignment across all years of the medical programme. In his capacity as Academic Lead for the Prescribing Safety Assessment (PSA), he provides academic leadership in the development of prescribing competence and medication safety.
