Registering with a GP

All students that are moving to Canterbury will need to register with a local GP You can register before you arrive, but be mindful that once you are registered with a new GP in Canterbury, you will no longer be registered with your home GP.

Information about your GP is an essential part of the Placement Planning Form and you will need to add this information to your form as soon as you have registered so that we can allocate you to a primary care network (PCN) for your placement. Students will not normally be placed at PCNs within which they are registered as a patient or where any family members work or are registered.

All students registering with a new GP will need to complete a GSM1 Registration Form. The practice you choose will have a link to this on their website. To complete this form students will need their NHS number (which can be obtained from their previous Practice), the name and address of their previous GP and their previous home address.

The registration process can take anywhere between 1 – 2 weeks to be complete, after which they will be able to make appointments, request medication, etc.

The NHS has produced a very helpful leaflet providing more information on how to register with a GP.
