About
Dr Ebreo is the Lead for Patient Engagement at Kent and Medway Medical School (KMMS), where he oversees public and patient involvement across the School and its wider stakeholders. He also teaches as a Clinical Skills Lecturer, contributing to the delivery and assessment of Clinical and Professional Skills within the undergraduate medicine programme. He graduated from St George’s Hospital Medical School in 2008, completing his Foundation Training in Medway and East Kent before undertaking anaesthetic training in the East of England Deanery. On returning to Kent, he worked as a Specialty Doctor in Critical Care while completing a PhD in Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Kent. More recently, he completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice and is awaiting confirmation of Fellowship with the Higher Education Academy. Previous has served as Course Director for both the MCh Surgery and is currently the Course Director for the Physician Associate Studies MSc, where he contributed to the design and delivery of competency-based curricula aligned with General Medical Council (GMC) standards. He has also contributed to a range of strategic groups and committees, including those focused on recruitment and admissions, scholarships, interprofessional education, and the involvement of Experts by Experience in medical education. Outside of medical education, Dr Ebreo is a keen ultra-distance cyclist, runner and aspiring duathlete.
Research interests
Dr Ebreo’s research interests focus on lifestyle medicine as well as the impact of exercise on health and endurance performance. His PhD explored how cycling exercise intensity and duration influence gross efficiency, with a particular emphasis on physiological adaptations to prolonged activity. This work examined the effects of different exercise protocols on whole-body and skeletal muscle oxygenation, alongside investigations into circulating microRNA biomarkers associated with mitochondrial biogenesis and angiogenesis in skeletal muscle.
Teaching
Dr Ebreo is an experienced medical educator with a passion for creating engaging and supportive learning environments for students. He has taught across undergraduate and postgraduate medicine, with particular expertise in clinical skills, professional practice, and applied medical sciences. Richard’s teaching places strong emphasis on innovation and inclusivity. He has collaborated with both internal and external NSH stakeholders to develop virtual clinical simulations, introduce e-learning platforms into curricula, and anatomy training opportunities to enhance accessibility and hands-on learning. He also champions interprofessional education, encouraging collaboration across healthcare disciplines to prepare students for real-world clinical practice. Dr Ebreo is dedicated to student wellbeing and professional development, combining his clinical background, academic expertise, and leadership experience to support the growth of safe, confident, and compassionate future doctors.
