About
Scarpa Schoeman is Reader in Medical Education and Assessment Lead at KMMS. He graduated as a medical doctor in 2000 with an MBChB degree from Stellenbosch University, South Africa. In response to his keen interest in and passion for medical education, he specialised in this niche area and completed his postgraduate (PG) certificate (2007), PG diploma (2009) and Masters degree in Medical Education (M.MEd) in 2010 from the Centre for Medical Education (CME) at Dundee University, UK. In 2015, he completed his PhD in Health Professions Education (Assessment and Standard setting) from the University of the Free State, RSA. He is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in the UK and is a General Medical Council (GMC) reviewer for the clinical and professional skills assessments of UK medical schools for the UK’s national Medical Licencing Assessment (MLA).
Previously he was Director of Undergraduate Medical Education at the Wits Medical School, Faculty of Health Sciences, Wits University, RSA. He is also an assessment consultant to support the development of medical schools in South Africa. His clinical interests and practice are in Emergency Medicine. Outside of work he is a keen supporter of rugby, golf, and cricket.
Research interests
He has published various peer reviewed articles and presented at international conferences on the topic of medical education and assessment. His research interests include assessment and standard setting (the Cohen method in particular), as well as the educational environment for medical students.
Teaching
He is passionate about teaching medical students and supporting their learning in clinical skills, clinical reasoning as well as assessment theory and science.
