Ian trained as an Engineer at the University of Cambridge, and later studied at Cranfield School of Management. He undertook senior information technology and financial management roles before becoming a founding partner of Odgers Berndston, with which he served as Chief Executive from 1972 to 1998. He formally retired in 2017.

Over the years, Ian’s professional activity within Kent has included Chairmanship of the South East Health Technologies Alliance, membership of the Enterprise and Innovation Task Group of the Kent Economic Board and acting as Business Champion to the Canterbury Enterprise Hub (University of Kent and SEEDA). He was also an Advisory Board Member of the Kent Business School for many years.

Ian’s philanthropic interests have included trusteeship of local and national arts organisations, such as the City of London Sinfonia, Classical Opera/The Mozartists, Sounds New and Deal Music and Arts. He was also Vice-Chairman of the New Marlowe Theatre Development Trust.
