We aspire to create more than 45 bursaries as a result of this campaign – support that is needed all the more as the burden of graduate debt grows ever larger. The Kent and Medway Medical School Bursary Fund, created by donations, will support medical students as they enter the challenging clinical years. Our financial support package will help medical students in their intensive clinical phase with placement-related expenses.
Medical Student Costs
Higher education is increasingly valued but also expensive. Every year of their five-year medical course, home students need to find:
Tuition Fees | £9,250 |
---|---|
Books and Equipment | £300 |
Rent | £6,500 |
Food | £900 |
Household Goods | £600 |
Personal Items | £600 |
Travel | £800 |
Leisure | £1,150 |
Total per Year | £20,100 |
By offering financial support to reduce reliance on loans, mitigate against the anxiety that can result from accrued debt and reduce the need to secure additional paid employment, we aim to ensure that the unique attributes of our programme are uniformly accessible to all of our undergraduates irrespective of their personal financial circumstances.
It was my sixth form student support team that originally introduced me to ways to gain help. This has helped relieve some of the stress of applying and sitting the costly entrance exams. Also, whilst studying at the University of Leeds the support I’ve been given has provided independence and ease of mind allowing me to focus on the tough curriculum. The programme is a fantastic opportunity and I have benefited greatly; I have always dreamed of becoming a doctor and now my dream is being realised.”
Louis Bunch a student from Brompton Academy (supported by the University of Kent) is studying medicine at the University of Leeds
This financial support will help first generation students, like Louis, to really engage and flourish at KMMS.
