Are you a student currently in Years 8-11 with an interest in medicine? Applications are now open for the Future Doctors: Virtual Medical Society programme starting in September.
If you’re looking to explore a career in medicine, we encourage you to apply for this exciting opportunity to join the Years 9-12 programme. We will kick off the programme with a fun, interactive activity day at the Verena Holmes campus, followed by virtual sessions working closely with a local doctor. This is a fantastic chance to gain insight into the medical field, enhance your knowledge, and prepare for your future studies.
Highlights from This Year’s Cohort
Recently, students from across Kent celebrated their graduation at Verena Holmes at Canterbury Christ Church University (CCCU) as part of the current Future Doctors programme. The graduation day included practical activities, networking with peers, and a formal ceremony with families in attendance. Parents participated in talks about the application process and ways to support their children’s medical journey.
About the Programme
Launched in 2021, this innovative programme aims to increase awareness of what it takes to apply and study medicine through engaging and interactive sessions. For Years 9 to 11, the programme includes online sessions based on the KMMS curriculum, covering topics like Heart, Lung and Blood; Health and Disease; Neuroscience and Behaviour; and the Immune System. These sessions, run by NHS clinicians with support from medical students, help bring the GCSE science curriculum to life.
For Year 12 students, the programme focuses on preparing for the medical school application process. This includes sessions on choosing the right medical school, preparing for the University Clinical Aptitude Test (UCAT), gaining work experience, and understanding medical school interviews.
Encouraging Aspiring Doctors
The aim of the programme is to encourage aspiring doctors from all backgrounds to consider a career in medicine. We are committed to widening access to medical degrees and have ambitious targets to recruit students from Kent, Medway, and beyond, particularly those from under-represented groups or disadvantaged backgrounds.
This programme is specifically designed for Year 9-12 students from non-selective schools in Kent and Medway. Applications from students at selective schools will be considered if there are any vacancies.
