Intercalation is where you take a year out of your studies to undertake an additional degree. It is an exciting opportunity to broaden your skills and knowledge base by exploring an area of interest outside of your medical degree. It can have a positive impact on your future career, particularly if you are interested in pursuing academic training. Students should check they meet the intercalation criteria as per the policy.
KMMS has been awarded funding from the NIHR to support full fees and stipends for intercalated Masters degrees from September 2024. We were awarded 5 funded places for 2024-25, and 8 each for 2025-6 and 2026-7. Students should make it clear in their application if they would like to be considered for this funded option, and evidence in their application how their chosen subject will aid their medical studies and develop their research experience. This opportunity is only open to current KMMS students.
Any student wishing to intercalate can apply directly to the course/institution, but should not accept a place without permission from KMMS. To formally express interest in intercalating, (as a student) please see the page on the student portal, where you will find the application form.
For more detailed information about intercalation and the processes, please read the handbook.
