KMMS Students Attend New Medical Schools Conference in Sunderland

On Saturday 22nd March, KMMS students, Abdullah Kassim, Lois Omotayo and Jamie Mawer, alongside KMMS Project Manager, Patrick Burkett, attended the inaugural New Medical Schools conference, hosted by the University of Sunderland Medical School.

The event brought together representatives from various institutions to connect, celebrate successes, and discuss the unique challenges of building clinical academic networks in “new” medical schools, to bring in new clinical academic training for students.

KMMS is passionate about developing research pathways for our students and has been very active in this area already securing £1.14 million funding from the NIHR. The funding will support 28 summer research internships, 21 students to undertake an intercalated degree, and the development of a KMMS research society.

At the event, keynote speakers shared their journeys to becoming Clinical Academics, reflecting on how it shaped their careers and professional aspirations. Students and Academic Clinical Fellows also contributed, including KMMS’s Abdullah Kassim presented his research, Clinical Audit on Liquid Morphine Sulphate Prescriptions for Chronic Pain in Medical Practice, which was well received and sparked a lively Q&A session.

Reflecting on the experience, Abdullah shared:
“I really enjoyed being able to present at the conference – it means a lot to me as I’ve taken a big interest in this area of research. The event has inspired me to further continue my opioid audit, possibly even take up an intercalated degree to take this research further in the future.”
