About
Dr Anna Romito is the Deputy Dean and Programme Director for the Undergraduate Programme at KMMS. She has overall responsibility for the undergraduate programme.
The first in her family to study medicine, Anna had an unrelenting vision to be a doctor since primary school. Anna graduated from University of Bristol before completing Foundation Training in Wessex and GP training at University College Hospital. Keen to understand the health impacts of culture and communities, Anna worked in Europe and in five different London boroughs as a GP before moving her clinical practice to Kent when she joined KMMS. She has represented the Royal College of General Practitioners in both local and international roles relating to Global Health.
With a passion for education that started with a student-selected component on near-peer teaching in her undergraduate programme, Anna has held undergraduate educational roles for over 20 years. Prior to KMMS, Anna worked at Imperial College London where she was the Curriculum Development Lead for the Lee Kong Chian School of Medicine, a new medical school in Singapore. Her experiences in effective medical curricula design and GMC accreditation have also supported the development of the new Pears Cumbria School of Medicine curriculum.
Research interests
Anna’s research interests relate to effective, scalable education that supports students’ professional and personal development. With degrees in Bioethics and in Clinical Education, she has presented nationally on methods to improve students’ engagement with omnipresent concepts of ethics, law and good medical practice. She is a keen researcher and advocate of peer-assisted learning, having supported its implementation and evaluation across four medical schools.
Anna also has research interests in identifying barriers to active participation - initially to healthcare for women before more recently focusing on students’ learning and success.
Teaching
Anna has experience in delivery to both undergraduate and postgraduate medical and non-medical learners. Since joining KMMS, her teaching is directed to the undergraduate programme. With a clearly structured and compassionate approach to her learners, she has continually received excellent feedback. In her clinical role, she supports the learning of both undergraduate KMMS students and postgraduate GP trainees.
As the Programme Director, Anna has implemented systems, training and support for the amazing and diverse team of undergraduate teachers at KMMS. This ensures that KMMS students receive quality-assured teaching materials, with best use of available resources, by supported clinical and academic staff who can continually keep their skills up to date with the evolving landscape of education and training both in the NHS and higher education.
