About

Avril is a GP working in Ramsgate and GP fellow in Coastal Deprivation at KMMS. She completed the Greater Manchester Deprivation GP training program, which had a focus on training GPs to deliver good quality healthcare in the context challenges and complexities of deprivation. Prior to this she was an Obstetrics and Gynaecology trainee in the North West and completed foundation training at Manchester Royal Infirmary. Avril undertook an intercalated Masters in Public Health as a student and also has a BSc(hons) in Anatomical Sciences. During the fellowship she is looking forward to learning more about how social determinants influence health in coastal settings.

Research interests

During the fellowship Avril plans to research the role of Focused Care Workers in an area of coastal deprivation in East Kent. She plans to explore patient experience using qualitative methodology. Avril previously undertook her masters dissertation looking at factors associated with women who unsuccessfully complete treatment for substance misuse. She has completed several QIPs usually related to her interest in women's health including how women experiencing domestic abuse are supported, HRT prescribing as well as undertaking data collection for a regional audit as part of a national project to reduce stillbirths. As a student she undertook a project on Asylum Seekers' Experience of Pregnancy, she won first prize for her essay which she presented at an RCOG awards evening.

Teaching

Avril is a PLAB examiner with GMC and has previously examined for MBChB OSCEs at The University of Manchester.
