Senior Lecturer and Academic Lead for Year 2

About

Joel is a Senior Lecturer and the Academic Lead for Year 2 of the BMBS programme. He joined KMMS from Canterbury Christ Church University where he gained extensive experience within the planning, validation, delivery, and evaluation of multiple pre-registration healthcare programmes. In addition to his responsibilities as Academic Lead for Year 2, Joel is also the module lead for ‘neuroscience and behaviour’. 

Joel is a graduate of King’s College London, where he studied neuroscience at the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology, and Neuroscience. Joel is a member of the British Association for Psychopharmacology and a fellow of the Higher Education Academy [FHEA] [Advance HE]. Joel also holds membership with the Academy of Medical Educators [MAcadMEd]. In addition, Joel is an External Examiner for the BMedSci programme at the University of Nottingham School of Medicine.

Research interests

Within his current research, Joel is exploring 'neuromyths' associated with learning and teaching, as well as reviewing the pathophysiology of acute confusion. Joel is also contributing to several papers exploring the identification and clinical management of ‘physical’ disorders which present as a ‘mental’ health disorder.

Teaching

Joel lectures extensively across the system-based modules in years one and two of the BMBS programme; these activities focus upon a mixture of a neuroanatomy, physiology, and neuroscience. Joel's interests include [but are not limited to]: the relationship between physical and mental ill health, psychoneuroimmunology, and psychopharmacology.
