KMMS Scholarships

Please find below a list of scholarships that are open to Kent and Medway medical students in the first cohort starting in September, 2020. Applications are now open to all offer holders who have firmly accepted unconditional or conditional offers from KMMS.

To note: Medical students will not be eligible for a payment in years that they are repeating, resitting, interrupting or intercalating.  If a student transfers to another course or withdraws, they will cease to be eligible for any outstanding payments.

KMMS Scholarships
All external awards for fees and maintenance are called scholarships. We do not recognize a difference between academic-based scholarships and needs-based bursaries.

Awards for academic and non-academic excellence are called prizes.

Fees and Maintenance

John Swire 1989 Scholarship

Scholarship amount: £9,250 p.a. full fees and £15,750 p.a. maintenance for five years

This scholarship has been funded by the John Swire 1989 Charitable Trust. The Trust has longstanding connections with Kent and has provided this extremely generous award for KMMS in its inaugural year.  It is particularly directed to a student who comes from a category of disadvantage.

The scholarship covers full fees and a maintenance allowance (currently £9,250 per year fees and £15,750 per year maintenance) for the full 5 years of the course £125,000 in total).

Andrew Johnson Scholarship

Scholarship amount: £9,250 p.a. full fees and £5,750 p.a. maintenance for four years

This scholarship has been generously endowed by East Kent University Hospitals Foundation Trust (EKUHFT).

This scholarship is open for application from students who have accepted an unconditional offer or firmly accepted a conditional offer from KMMS. Preference will be given to a student who currently lives in the area served by East Kent University Hospitals Trust, or attended school or college in this area. If there are no suitable applicants, this can be extended to all areas of the historic county of Kent.

There will be preference for students who come from a category of disadvantage, with appropriate evidence, and who can demonstrate financial need. Sporting and charitable activities which benefit the community are also taken into account.

Henry Oldfield Trust Scholarships 

Scholarship amount: £125,000 full fees for four years (x3)

These scholarships have been generously awarded to support KMMS students for 4 years, after which the NHS Bursary comes into effect to cover fees. One scholarship is intended to reward academic excellence and achievement, and two are awarded on the basis of need, one for a student who has not attended university, and the other for a post-graduate student.

The Henry Oldfield Trust Academic Scholarship

The Henry Oldfield Trust wish to support one KMMS student on the basis of high academic achievement. School and university level excellence are both recognised. Awards will cover full fees for 4 years.

The Henry Oldfield Trust Support Scholarship

The Henry Oldfield Trust wish to support two KMMS students on the basis of need, one scholarship will be for a student who has never been to university; the second scholarship will be for a post graduate student. Awards will cover full fees for 4 years.

Medway Council KMMS Scholarship

Scholarship amount: £46,250 ie. £9,250 p.a. full fees for five years

This scholarship has been generously funded by Medway Council, and is intended to support widening participation efforts in schools in the Medway area.

Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust (KMPT) Scholarship

Scholarship amount: £46,250 ie. £9,250 p.a. full fees for five years

This scholarship has been generously funded by the Kent and Medway NHS and Social Care Partnership Trust (KMPT). The Trust provides mental health services across the whole county of Kent, and the award is intended to support a candidate with a demonstrated interest and aptitude in mental health.

The scholarship covers full fees (currently £9,250 per year) for the full 5 years of the course (total £46,250 total)

Jenny Conway Scholarship

Scholarship amount: £46,250 ie. £9,250 p.a. full fees for five years

This scholarship has been generously endowed by Mrs Jenny Conway to honour the service of her family to the NHS. It is particularly directed at NHS professionals who are re-directing themselves into a medical career; who often cannot access the Student Loan company as they are paying off a previous loan.

Maintenance (5 years)

Canterbury City Council Scholarship

Scholarship amount: £25,000 ie. £5,000 p.a. maintenance for five years

This scholarship has been generously funded by Canterbury City Council, to support widening participation activities in Canterbury and Kent.

The scholarship offers £5,000 p.a. to a student enrolled on the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery course who demonstrates the need for maintenance support during their studies.

KIMS Hospital Nassar Hussain Scholarship

Scholarship amount: £25,000 ie. £5,000 p.a. maintenance for five years

The KIMS Hospital, Maidstone wishes to contribute to the Kent & Medway Medical School (KMMS) by supporting a student has had to change their course in life to study medicine and will be subject to financial hardship in order to achieve this.

This might include, for example, losing current salary support to attend a full time course or being in a situation of reduced family support.

Santander KMMS Scholarships

Scholarship amount: £5,000 p.a. maintenance for five years (x4)

There are four scholarships which have been generously funded by Santander Universities, (Santander UK), as part of its national support for widening participation activities. It includes understandings for scholars to take part in widening participation activities after award.

The scholarship will go to four students enrolled on the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery course who demonstrate the need for maintenance support during their studies.

Rake/Jordan Scholarship 

Scholarship amount: £2,000 p.a. maintenance for 5 years

This Award was established in 2020 by Dr Mark Rake and Mrs Jill Jordan to provide ongoing assistance to medical students with their living costs for the duration of their BM BS study.

Jean Byers Scholarship

Scholarship amount: £5,000 ie. £1,000 p.a. maintenance for 5 years

This scholarship has been kindly donated by Mrs Jean Byers, who has specified the award for 5 years to support a student who evidences financial hardship. The evidence should correspond to the evidence needed to qualify for a UCAT bursary, whether or not the applicant actually applied for a UCAT bursary.

R.G.Hills Scholarship

Scholarship amount: £5,000 ie. £1,000 p.a. maintenance for 5 years

This scholarship has been funded by the R.G.Hills Charitable Trust. The Trust has longstanding connections with Kent and has generously provided this award for the Kent & Medway Medical School (KMMS) in its inaugural year.

Maintenance (1 year)

Canterbury Health Education Foundation Scholarships

Scholarship amount: £5,000 for one year only (x10)

There are ten scholarships which have been generously funded by Canterbury Health and Education Foundation, as part of its support of KMMS students.

The students must be enrolled on the Bachelor of Medicine/Bachelor of Surgery course and can demonstrate the need for maintenance support during their studies. Some of these scholarships are intended for students who cannot access the Student Loan company and have difficulties meeting the whole cost of the full-time course.

Procedure

Only firm KMMS offer holders (conditional or unconditional) are eligible for these awards.

All academic scholarships are administered by the Scholarships Unit at the University of Kent. Application will be by standard written form, with appropriate deadlines timed with the admissions and results cycle so as not to disadvantage any group of offer holders.

Award decisions are by scrutiny of written applications (and supporting documents). Interviews are not contemplated at this time, but may be used in exceptional circumstances.

Decisions on awards will be made by the Recruitment and Admissions Board.
