KMMS Scholarships

Applicants 2024

Applications are open to all offer holders who have firmly accepted unconditional or conditional offers from KMMS. Please note all these scholarships are for Kent and Medway Medical School applicants only.

All external awards for fees and maintenance are called scholarships. We do not recognize a difference between academic-based scholarships and needs-based bursaries.

To note: Medical students will not be eligible for a payment in years that they are repeating, resitting, interrupting or intercalating. If a student transfers to another course or withdraws, they will cease to be eligible for any outstanding payments.

The deadline for applications for all 2024 scholarships is 30th June 2024, 23:59 (BST).

Full Fee Waiver (5 years)

The Jenny Conway KMMS Scholarship 2024

Scholarship amount: £46,250 fee waiver – Made up of £9,250 per annum for 5 years

Honouring Jenny Conway’s daughters’ service to the NHS, this scholarship is open for applications from students who meet any of the following:

  • From a Kent secondary school.
  • First generation to go to University.
  • NHS professionals redirecting into medicine with a preference for applicants from the County of Kent. With family responsibilities.
  • Graduates who are unable to get a student loan to pay fees because they already have or have had a student loan.

Maintenance (5 years)

KMMS Pears Scholarship

Scholarship amount: £25,000 – Made up of £5,000 per annum for 5 years

The Kent and Medway Medical School (KMMS) have received a donation from the Pears Foundation to be able to support students in financial hardship through their studies.

We will be awarding this to 4 students in accordance to the following eligibility criteria:

All candidates must:

  • Have accepted an unconditional or firmly accepted a conditional offer from the Kent and Medway Medical School
  • Provide evidence of financial hardship

This award is only open to KMMS applicants starting their course in September 2024.

Christopher Marsh Family Memorial Scholarship

Scholarship amount: £26,000 – Made up of £5,200 per annum for 5 years

This scholarship is open to Kent and Medway Medical School applicants only.

The Christopher Marsh Family Memorial Fund was created by Commander Colin Marsh and his wife, Yvonne Marsh, in memory of their late son, Christopher.  The fund was initially established to support graduating students clear small debts, but in later years was redirected to support the Kent and Medway Medical School.  Commander Marsh passed away in 2003 and Yvonne passed away in 2021 and the fund now supports scholarships for KMMS students in financial need over the age of 21 years with a maintenance stipend.

This scholarship is open for applications from students who meet any of the following:

  • Have accepted an unconditional or firmly accepted a conditional offer from the Kent and Medway Medical School.
  • Be over the age of 21 at the commencement of their studies with KMMS.
  • Be able to provide evidence of financial hardship

Dartford Borough Council Scholarship 

Scholarship amount: £25,000 – Made up of £5000 per annum for 5 years

This scholarship is open to Kent and Medway Medical School applicants only. The scholarship has been generously funded by Dartford Borough Council and is intended to support a single student with living expenses through each of their 5 years of study. This scholarship is open for applications from students who meet any of the following:

  • Provide evidence of financial hardship.
  • Provide evidence of ongoing commitment to activities that benefit the community in Dartford or Kent
  • Must be from Dartford Borough or must have previous evidenced Dartford Borough connections. Evidence could be birth, residence of immediate family at any time, or education (post primary)

Priority for the Dartford Borough Council Scholarship will be given to candidates who:

  • Are the first person in family to go to University

Widening Participation Scholarship

Scholarship amount: £1500 Maintenance per annum for a maximum of 5 years

This award is only open to KMMS applicants starting their course in September 2024. The Kent and Medway Medical School (KMMS) are dedicated to supporting students from all backgrounds and are offering Widening Participation scholarships to those most in need. The scholarship will consist of a maintenance payment of £1,500 per annum for the duration of the course totalling £7,500 over 5 years.

All candidates must:

  • Have accepted an unconditional or firmly accepted a conditional offer from the Kent and Medway Medical School
  • Provide evidence of financial hardship

Additional factors that will be taken into account include belonging to a category of disadvantage such as: The first in family to go to university, registered young carer or care leaver.

We will be awarding this to 4 students in accordance to the eligibility criteria.

Procedure

Only firm KMMS offer holders (conditional or unconditional) are eligible for these awards.

All academic scholarships are administered by the Scholarships Unit at the University of Kent. Application will be by standard written form, with appropriate deadlines timed with the admissions and results cycle so as not to disadvantage any group of offer holders.

Award decisions are by scrutiny of written applications (and supporting documents). Interviews are not contemplated at this time, but may be used in exceptional circumstances.

Decisions on awards will be made by the Recruitment and Admissions Board.
